Couple Guilty Of Murdering Man In Acid Attack
Liam Smith, 38, was shot in the face and then poured acid on him outside his home in Wigan, Greater Manchester, on November 24 last year. Michael Hillier, 39, from Sheffield, admitted to manslaughter but refused to kill the electrician, and went to the Minshull Street Royal Court in Manchester after Mr. Smith’s statement, after he and his 37-year-old girlfriend, Rachel Fulstow, alleged that Fulstow had raped her. He said they were planning to attack him.
Working at a property management company, Fulstow denied knowing that her then partner was planning to harm him. When the jury found both defendants guilty of murder on Wednesday, Mr. Smith’s family shouted “yes” and “thank you very much” before crying and hugging them.
Handcuffed to the dock, Hillier looked at his former partner as the verdicts were announced. The court heard that Fulstow had met Mr. Smith via the dating app Tinder, and that the two had gone on a date in York in 2019, and Smith said they had “non-consensual sex” at a hotel in York.
Court Trial
The court heard the woman say that she did not define it as rape and that she went to lunch with Mr. Smith the next day. He started a relationship with Hillier in 2021 but said Hillier could be verbally abusive and unpredictable and was dissatisfied with having a one-night stand with Mr. Smith.
She told the court that her first knowledge of the attack on Mr Smith was when Hillier came to her house the next morning and told her about it. Fulstow, a graduate of international travel and tourism management from Leeds Met University, said she was “afraid” of going to the police about her boyfriend.
The court heard that the couple went on vacation together to Jamaica a few days after the murder. Hillier, who told the court he was involved in the production and distribution of a large-scale cannabis operation, said they both planned the attack on Mr Smith after Fulstow revealed She had been “graphically raped” by her.
He told the jury: “We both decided jointly that we would deal with the matter on our own, seek justice ourselves and resort to illegal means.” The courtroom was evacuated during his testimony after Mr. Smith’s family members reacted to his description of the victim as a rapist.
Judge Maurice Greene told the jurors that they did not need to decide what happened between Mr. Smith and Fulstow. Summing up, he said: “We’ll probably never know what really happened that night, and that probably doesn’t matter.”
The court heard that Mr. Smith was driven out of his home at around 6:40 pm by Hillier, who shot Smith in the face, then poured acid and then soda crystals on his face and body. Fulstow’s phone showed that Mr. Smith had researched the electric company and the Mitsubishi Shogun cars used by Hillier, which had subsequently burned down.
The court heard that he had checked the weather in Wigan on the morning of the murder. Fulstow was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice. The case was adjourned for a verdict on Thursday.
