“The boy had no idea the gun was in his backpack,” Pre-K 4 SA officials said, adding that backpacks will not be allowed on campus until further notice.
Police officials said an off-duty parking attendant who guarded the school was there by chance to help the teachers confiscate the gun and report it to the San Antonio Police.
“This incident highlights the important collaboration between school faculty and law enforcement personnel,” SAPD Chief William McManus said in a statement. “Fast steps were taken to address the situation and arrest it. There is no current threat to the safety of the school or students.”
Police said they will increase their presence at the school in the foreseeable future.
The boy involved in the incident has since been detained by Child Protective Services, Robles was arrested and released on $4,500 bail Wednesday. He was accused of endangering children, but said additional charges and arrests could be made while SAPD investigates the incident.
The incident brings to mind the disturbing shooting of Richneck Elementary teacher Abigail Zwerner, who was shot by a 6-year-old student in her classroom in Virginia earlier this year.
Contrary to the Texas case, however, the boy involved in Zwerner’s shooting appeared to be aware of what he had allegedly bragged about even though he believed he had killed his teacher, according to court documents that emerged last week.
“I did…I shot that bitch to death,” the small-sized pistol packer brags, the docs show. “I took my mother’s gun last night.”
According to Education Week, which actively monitors such events, there have been 24 shootings in American schools so far in 2023 that have resulted in injury or death.
So far, 13 people, including nine children and four adults, have died in the armed attacks.
