Police are looking for Tashawnda Nicole Drayton, who said a child died in Franklin on Wednesday.

According to Franklin Police, the police responded to a call about a gunfight on the 300th block of Artis Street at around 3 PM.

“I was sitting in my front room watching TV and I heard 4 or 5 shots of ‘bam, bam, bam, bam’ about 4 or 5 times,” said Betty, an Artis Street resident who is friends with 10-. year old grandmother. “It’s really sad, sad, sad.”

“As soon as I looked out the window, a bullet came into my room, so I went out to see what had happened. Then I saw a little boy lying on the floor shot dead. He’s wounded,” said Keion Liggins, a neighbor.

When police arrived on the scene, a 10-year-old boy and a 37-year-old man received life-threatening injuries after being shot.

Franklin Police Chief Steve Patterson said, “A family member at the initial scene of the incident picked up the young man and moved him to another family residence down the street.”

Both victims were later transferred to Bon Secours Southhampton Memorial Hospital, according to police. The man was then flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. The injured child died in the hospital he was taken to.

The next morning, spoke to parents who said their 10-year-old son, La’Marj Deshawn Holden, was the child killed in the shooting. Franklin City Public Schools issued the following statement regarding the death of one of their students: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and ask everyone to come together and support the bereaved family at this time.”

According to the police, four people came to the man’s house in a vehicle and an argument broke out. Tashawnda Nicole Drayton, 24, was one of those involved in the altercation.

Police Investigation

Police said their investigation determined that Drayton shot both victims. A warrant was issued for her arrest.

According to the Franklin Police press release, Drayton is a 1.70-foot-tall, 250-pound Black woman with dark hair and brown eyes. Wanted for first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated malicious injury, two separate charges. setting fire to an occupied home, using a firearm while committing a felony, threatening to burn or damage a building, possession of a firearm by a convicted criminal, and discharging a firearm in a public place.A woman with the same name has multiple criminal files In Virginia and North Carolina between 2018 and 2022.

Police said Drayton was believed to be armed and dangerous.

“She needs to be taken into custody immediately,” Chief Patterson said. “At this point, we went with the U.S. Marshals, they have national jurisdiction, and while we don’t believe it’s national, we believe it has better ties to cities in our nativity.”

Chief Patterson said the Franklin Police Department has canceled the weekly Keeping Up With Kids event out of respect for the family.
